Carrickmacross Lace
by Nellie Ó Cléirigh
The author opens with a section on the history and background of this Irish embroidered net lace which was inspired originally by some Italian appliqué lace which Mrs Grey Porter, the wife of the Rector of Donaghmoyne, a small community north-west of Carrickmacross in County Monaghan, brought back from her continental honeymoon in 1816. By the following decade she had evolved an individual style and had established a cottage industry in her home parish. It soon became more widely practiced. This section is well illustrated, including photographs of pieces from the author's collection.
A section on technique, explains both the appliqué and guipure methods which comprise Carrickmacross. There are pictures of the stitches and descriptive text.
The remainder of the book presents 32 patterns derived and redrawn from original pieces and drawings which were part of the author's collections..
