Popular author Ulrike Voelcker's books are always eagerly awaited. This time she has taken a comprehensive look at Torchon techniques - and again we are delighted with the meticulous detail and style that are always a feature of her books.
This is the first part of a three-part series which is sure to be a must-have for all lace makers with an interest in deepening their knowledge of Torchon techniques. A basic knowledge of lace making is assumed. It presents as a step-by-step course with the techniques explained in great detail using a total of 75 small prickings. There are sections on clothwork, torchon ground, spiders, Scandinavian ground, roseground, triangular ground, leaves and tallies, gimps, decorations in half-stitch, and more.
It consists of a set of loose pages (126 sides on 63 double-sided sturdy, glossy sheets) in a plastic wallet, punched for holding in a loose-leaf binder (not supplied) and to which the further two sections may be added as they are published and purchased. The author's claim that this approach is more economical to the lacemaker and more practical than a bound hardcover book - and also allows individual sheets to be handled easier when copying the prickings - appears to be well-founded.
