Suffolk Lace
by Nicky Howener-Townsend
An unexpected find, in 2000, in a curiosity shop in the small town of Beccles on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, of an old postcard showing a Suffolk lacemaker was the inspiration for the author's nine year long research into the story of Suffolk lace and, in particular, the lacemakers in the village of Eye.
Her careful and intensive research, which was to extend over the next nine years, was to put together the story of a lacemaking community, that had its origins in the 17th century but had virtually disappeared by 1870 with its its lace being all-but forgotten.over the following years.
The carefully documented research is followed by an extensive section of the author's faithfully redrawn patterns of Suffolk lace.
