by Elizabeth M. Kurella

The author begins by recognising and defining the difference between the lace connoisseur - who sees the lace as a collectible art form - and the lacemaker, dedicated to the 'rules' of the lace form they make. Youghal Irish needle lace, she finds, brings these two worlds close, helped by the environments in which they evolved.

After brief sections on the characteristics of this lace form, work from a number of historic collections are explored. These include that once displayed in the Plauen Museum, German which were sadly lost in the two world wars and a section of over 50 pages exploring the beautiful work of Sister Mary Regis in the late 19th century. These sections are well illustrated with many photographs of the work and pattern extracts to encourage the lacemaker.

There follows a section, by Irma Osterman, on the techniques of making the lace, aimed at the beginner but likely of use to those developing their skills as well. A number of patterns, with written advice to support the pattern and photograph, are included

In excellent, essentially as-new condition.
